This stunning item is a large decorative and informative educational chart illustrating and describing the Solar System from around 1877.
The top half of the chart consists of the solar system with 12 months of the year. Flanking this are a number of vignettes that include: The passage of the Moon; Sun Sports as seen through a telescope, Nebulae, craters and volcanos of the Moon, a 625kg meterorite, the orbit of the Earth through the seasons, a grand telescope, the giant planets of Jupiter and Saturn, the direction of the axis of the Zodiacal light.
The bottom half of the map consists of columns of French text describing the 'Main Elements of Astronomy'. There is text concerning the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Comets. There is a 74 item table of 'Names of Constellations' in the lower right corner. Flanking the text are a series of illustrative vignettes of: The first quarter phase of the Moon, thr Comet of 1844 as viewed through a telescope, the size of the Sun in comparison to the planets, orbits of the 9 periodic comets of our Solar world.
