London Underground Poster - Knightsbridge - by Herbert Ashwin Budd (1930)

£1,950.00

Travel Underground between 10 and 4

Designed by Herbert Ashwin Budd (1881-1950). Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd for Underground Electric Railways of London Company Ltd. Print Code: 1382.1100.16.7.30. Colour lithograph on paper. Measures 101cm x 63cm (Double Royal). Condition: Very good. Linen backed.

This evocative scene outside Knightsbridge tube station beautifully captures the energy and optimism of London shopping in the 1930s. Shoppers are advised to avoid the rush hours and instead travel “between 10 & 4”.

It features the original entrance to Knightsbridge, designed by architect Leslie Green with his signature ‘oxblood’ tiles. This beautiful ornate entrance was modernised in an art deco style just three years after this poster was issued.

In the foreground, well-heeled shoppers (being mainly women and children) pour past the station entrance and admire the exotic fabrics in the shop window. A 1920’s omnibus on its way to Aldwych collects passengers while a young girl’s attention has been caught by a street performer presenting his chicks.

We have been able to identify the poster inside the lovely bronze display frame. It is ‘Summer Days’ by Vladimir Polunin issued in February 1930.

Herbert Ashwin Budd was an artist, designer and teacher; he joined the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1921. Budd designed two posters for London Transport, both in 1930.
