1930s London Underground Destination Plate - Metropolitan and District Lines
Original London Underground enamel cab destination plate reading 'Metropolitan' on one side and 'District' on the other. Black lettering on a yellow background.
Double sided Enamel coloured sign with brass ends and swivel axels. Measures 60cm (L) by 10cm (H). Condition: Excellent used condition.
This sign came from O/P/Q-Stock Underground cabs (in service from 1937). It is a swivel-plate with brass ends and was located below the station desintation plate. (see photo)
The Metropolitan & District Lines were the first Underground railways in London opening in the 1860s. The Metropolitan and District lines together formed a continuous ‘inner circle’ in 1884 and therefore it would be necessary for trains to switch the line they were serving as they travelled around the inner circle. In 1948, the inner circle would be become a line in its own right, becoming the Circle Line.
