Following the opening of the Metropolitan railway in 1863, The District Railway (DR) was the 2nd Underground railway to open in London in 1868, running from South Kensington to Westminster.

The District Railway Company produced large scale maps laid on Linen between 1874 -1907, along with smaller paper pocket maps from 1877 - making these among the first maps of the London Underground. This is the 6th edition published in 1898 and whilst there remained just two Underground railways, this was a period of great development and by 1908 there were a further 4 underground ‘tube’ railways were operating under London.

The owner of the map - Andrew Alfred Collyer Bristow (1826-1909) - was a prominent Solicitor in the Victorian period, running his own firm Collyer Bristow at 4 Bedford Row, London - who still exist today at the same address!
