London Bridge - Lake Havasu City, Arizona (1971)

Designed by ‘Reinhardt’. Published by McCulloch Properties Inc. dated 1971. Colour offset lithograph on thick paper stock. Measures 89cm x 58.5cm. Condition: Very good. A number of pin holes and minor damage to the edges. Some minor creasing in places.

At first glance, one could miss it. The poster, a painting by ‘Reinhardt’, depicts London Bridge, complete with Union Flag and Beefeater. Nothing unusual there. Except at the bottom of this poster reads ‘Lake Havasu City Arizona’. This is an exceptionally rare original poster, dated 1971, upon the opening of London Bridge at Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

It is a story told the world over - though with considerable embellishment! American entrepreneur and property developer Robert P. McCulloch purchased the (then) current London Bridge from the City of London in the late 1960s for £1 Million and rebuilt it in Lake Havasu City, Arizona USA - opening in 1971. It is a common myth that McCulloch bought the bridge having never seen it - believing he was getting Tower Bridge. This is vehemently denied (but it makes a good cautionary tale!).

How did this come about? Several bridges have spanned the River Thames at Southwark and the City of London over the past 2000 years. However, the London Bridge of 1209 remained in use until 1831. The 1831 Bridge was developed by John Rennie but by 1962 it was considered not sturdy enough to handle increased traffic. London bridge was put up for sale and McCulloch, who was struggling to get his Lake Havasu project off the ground, purchased the bridge for £1 Million to attract investors, home buyers and tourists to Lake Havasu.

In fact, only the exterior granite was removed from the Bridge’s structure and shipped. This was applied to a new cement structure which didn’t cross any body of water until a channel was dredged across a peninsular of land to create an Island in Colorado River which the Lake Havasu City.
