London Underground Poster - 'The West-End is Awakening' - E. Dinkel (1931)

Designed by Ernest Dinkel RCA (1894-1983). Printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Lithographers London WC2 for Underground Electric Railways. Colour lithograph on paper. Currently in a painted wood frame but also available unframed to aid shipping. Print Code 1000. 1785. 8/31. Double Royal format 102x 63cm. Condition: Excellent. No folds or tears. Some minor discolouring along the top edge. Provenance: From a private collector based in Winchester. An example is held in the V&A Collection.
The radiant poster by Ernest Dinkel invites revellers back to the West End following the opening of the new Piccadilly Circus Underground station in 1931. Ernest Dinkel’s design achieves remarkable depth through a multitude of layers; As the sun sets behind the unmistakable dome of St Pauls Cathedral, layers of cityscape tower over the scene. In the foreground, silhouetted figures of all ages gather around Eros upon the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain. Public transport of every form make their way through the West End, bathed in the light of the illuminated signs of Piccadilly Circus.
Due to the rapid growth in in leisure travel in the early 20th Century, passenger numbers through Piccadilly Circus went from 1.5 million in 1906 to 18 million by 1922. A new sub-surface booking hall and circulation area was designed by Charles Holden. The iconic station was completed in 1928 at which point the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain (Eros) was returned to its position after a short stay in Victoria Embankment Gardens during construction.
Ernest Michael Dinkel was a Huddersfield-born painter, designer and sculptor. He studied and later taught at the RCA. He was Head of Stourbridge College of Art (1940-47), and Head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art (1947-1961). He designed posters for the Underground Group between 1931-1933.
