Original silkscreen-print poster. Published by The Austin Motor Company Ltd. Publication No.2153. Double crown format: Measures 30” x 20” / 76cm x 50cm. Originally had some large vertical tears but the poster is now professionally restored and linen-backed.
An incredibly rare poster of an an iconic car. This stunning screen-print poster was issued to Austin dealerships ahead of the launch of the MINI Cooper in 1961.
Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, the MINI was launched in 1959 and has been an icon of British popular culture ever since. Issigonis' friend John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company and designer and builder of Formula One cars, saw the potential of the Mini for competition. Issigonis was initially reluctant to see the Mini in the role of a performance car, but after John Cooper appealed to BMC management, the two men collaborated to create the Mini Cooper. The Austin Mini Cooper and Morris Mini Cooper debuted in September 1961.
Whilst silkscreen printing was common among campaign, protest and concert posters in the 1960s, it was far less common in the commercial space which tended towards high quality / high speed lithographic printing. The slow and messy process of silkscreen printing was done mainly by hand - it was and remains an artform in its own right and suited to low print runs. The use of paint rather than ink creates a rich, textured finish and this poster is all the more beautiful for it.
