This is a beautiful and exceptionally rare poster by the highly regarded commercial artist HG Gawthorn. Gawthorn was originally an architect before moving into commercial art, notably designing advertising posters for the LNER. Gawthorn specialised in evocative seaside scenes but it is his 1928 poster of the Forth Road Bridge that he is most well known.
Gawthorn captures the period so beautifully in his posters and this vibrant scene of Fraserburgh Beach is no exception. The characters in the foreground are so reminiscent of the 1930s; the smoking gentleman in his blazer and the lady, reading under her fashionable parasol. Swimmers, sunbathers and Beach huts draw your eye to the harbour and town beyond. This compelling poster would have been displayed at stations across the LNER network, drawing leisure visitors and in doing so, creating more passengers for the LNER.
Fraserburgh is a fishing town and seaside resort in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The Fraserburgh railway station opened in 1865 transforming the fishing town into a popular seaside destination. However, in 1965 the station was closed to passengers as part of the 'Beecham cuts'. Today, Fraserburgh has the unfortunate claim as the most distant town from the UK railway network, 35 miles from its nearest station.
