Framed in high quality wood frame with UV filtering plexiglass. Print Code 673-2000 7-4-30. Double Royal format 99x 61cm. Condition: Unfolded and in overall very good condition. Poster has been slightly trimmed during mounting but print code still visible. Some water marks at bottom edge and a scratch top right.
This stunning London Underground poster by Arnrid Johnston depicts a clever and satirical reversal of a Zoo scene, with the various social stereotypes of London being displayed for the pleasure of zoo animals. Like Macdonald Gill and other illustrators engaged by the London Underground, Johnston seeks to arrest the attention of Underground passengers through humour and social commentary. Though its primary purpose was to advise which station to alight for the Zoo at Regents Park.
Produced in 1930, the image captures the time and its fashions wonderfully. From the trouser-wearing tennis player, the the top-hatted politicians to the smoking Mayfair Beauties, there is a strong art deco feel and a snapshot of a time when London was the centre of a global Empire.
Born in Sweden, Arnrid Johnston came to London where she studied at the Slade School of Art. Johnston was a prolific artist who carved in marble and wood as well as being a painter. A reoccurring theme in Johnston's work was a love of animals and her London Transport posters include several for the Zoo, showcasing her great talents as an animal artist. Johnston also wrote and illustrated childrens books.
