1964-1969 London Underground Pocket Maps By Paul Garbutt
London Underground Pocket Maps Designed by Paul Garbutt
4 variants 1964-1969
Designed by Paul Garbutt, based on the diagrammatic principles of HC Beck. Printed by Johnson Riddle & Co Limited for London Transport. Bi-fold card map printed in colour. Measures 22.5cm x 15cm (open). Outstanding near mint condition.
Garbutt’s enduring design, with its smooth curves, horizontal Central Line and a distinctive ‘Thermos Flask’ Circle line, was first used in 1963 in poster format and in 1964 for the card pocket maps and widely considered a vast improvement on Harold Hutchinson’s design of 1960-1963.
Not Harry Beck? The relationship between Harry Beck (creator of the Underground diagram in 1933) and London Transport was a tense and, at times, acrimonious one. For nearly 30 years, Harry Beck had managed to retain the responsibility for all revisions and edits of the diagram until Harold Hutchinson (Publicity Officer of London Transport) decided to redraw the Underground Map and credit himself as designer.
Beck was dismayed by Hutchinson’s poor design and the manner in which he was being treated. Despite dozens of letters and submitting three hand-drawn design proposals, London Transport never engaged his services again.
