1969 New York Subway Station Map - Huge Poster

£650.00

Rapid Transit Guide

New York City Transit Authority. 1969 Revision. Colour lithograph. Measures 150cm x 117cm (59 inches x 46 inches). Folded. Condition: Good. Small areas of loss at edges and corners. Some edge damage. Old sellotape repairs have been removed and redone with archival tape. Writing in marker pen on the back.

This enormous NY Subway map was printed the year Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. This 59 inch format was printed for display in stations and were usually discarded, destroyed or pasted over when a new issue came along. Therefore original NY station maps are exceptionally rare.

Following the 1958 (mostly) diagrammatic design by George Solomon, The map was redesigned in 1967 adopting R.Raleigh D'Adamo's proposal to color-code the subway by individual routes rather than by historic operating company. Whilst it has become rather cluttered, it still retains much of Solomons diagrammatic principles which were taken even further in 1972 by Massimo Vignelli.
