The London production of Les Miserables, by Cameron Mackintosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company, premiered at the Barbican Theatre, London in September 1985. In March 1987, Les Misérables opened at Broadway Theatre in New York following a hugely successful 8-week trial run in Washington.
Opening with $4 million of advanced ticket sales, the Broadway production ran until May 2003 making it the second longest running musical after Cats. It saw a revival just 3 years later in 2006 running until early 2008 and revived again in 2014.
This extremely rare Broadway debut poster board (often referred to as a window card) is a rare survivor in wonderful condition. The striking design by Dewynters, identical to that used for the London production, is an adaptation of the original book cover illustration by Emile Bayard and combines with the distinctive 'Caston Antique' typeface to create was has become one of the most recognisable and iconic visuals of the 20th Century.
Les Miserables is a musical adapted from French poet and novelist Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name. The original French musical premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein.
