The First Walkman - Sony TPS-L2 Stowaway - Immaculate with Box

£0.00
sold out

1979 Sony TPS-L2 “Stowaway” portable cassette player in unused mint condition complete with box, MDR-3L2 headphones, wearable leather case and demonstration tape. Replacement foams have been included, original foams had disintegrated.

The Sony TPS-L2 was launched in July 1979 before it had even been given a name. Across the world, the device was marketed under names such as Soundabout (US), Stowaway (UK) Freeway (Scandanavia) before Sony settled on 'Walkman' later in 1979 (adding it to the case).

This is a very early example before the name Walkman was settled and the unit case redesigned to carry the Walkman wordmark. Remarkably this particular appears to be unused, though one can only speculate as to why! Stored in a cupboard for its whole life, the seller believed her father (who worked in music tech industry) may have have been given it and forgot about it.

Amazingly, the TPS-L2 has two headphone jacks that enabled friends to listen together whilst the Hotwire button served as an intercom. Interest in the Sony TPS-L2 has surged after featuring in the Marvel Comics film Guardians of the Galaxy - with Cosplay enthusiasts seeking an original TPS-L2 to complete their Star-Lord costumes.
