Though it was less technically advanced than the Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear and other competitors, the Game Boy's excellent battery life and rugged hardware and the popularity of the bundled Tetris and other games made it much more successful.
It may look hopelessly chunky now, but back then it was unimaginably svelte, a proper console that you play on anywhere – an ingenious gaming equivalent of the Sony TPS-L2 Walkman!
It is one of the most recognizable devices from the 1990s, becoming a cultural icon in the years following its release.
