Print Code Ad 5499/ 7000/1946. Condition: Excellent. Some repaired edge tears. Folded as issued, now stored rolled. Some additional creasing in places. Archival tape applied to a few edge tears at the fold.
This stunning poster, produced jointly by GWR and SR, features a scenic illustration by Walter E Spradbery of a tree lined River Thames with people in rowing boats and punting on the calm water and a weeping willow tree on a small island reflected on the ripples, the stylised title text in yellow on the border below between the GWR and SR logos in green.
Walter E. Spradbery was an artist and pacifist. Refusing to take up arms in the First World War, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and became a paramedic and stretcher bearer on the Somme battlefield. Here he earned many citations for bravery including the awarding of a Distinguished Conduct Medal. He went on to produce a significant body of work, much of it for London Transport with his famous posters. Married to opera singer, Dorothy d'Orsay, they lived an idyllic existence at their home, 'The Wilderness' in Epping Forest. The biography of his life and times "My Dear Jim" has been compiled and published by his son, John Spradbery
