Original 1966 World Cup British Railways Poster
“World Cup - July 1966 - England - At-a-glance to the grounds”. Colour lithograph printed by McCorquodale & Co Ltd for British Railways. Measures approximately 40"(101cm) x 25" (60cm). Stamp on rear showing "Sept 1965". Condition: Excellent with no tears. This poster was originally issued folded into 4 panels. There are some additional horizontal folds and some creasing.
A rare survivor in great condition, this poster would have been displayed in stations across England providing passengers with a "at-a-glance" view of the football grounds involved in the world cup. Issued in September 1965, 9 months before the tournament, British Railways are clearly trying to encourage forward planning and positioning itself as the primary mode of travel to these venues.
Whilst official World Cup posters were printed in huge quantities and issued to almost anyone that would display them, the British Railways poster was printed in relatively low numbers and issued to station staff. Many would have been pasted to walls (as was the primary method back then). Those not displayed would have likely been discard. Therefore there are very few examples of this poster are still in existence.
The poster features the Jules Rimet Cup, which was famously stolen before the tournament only for a dog called Pickles to find it discarded in a bush!
