This striking art deco poster by Anna Zinkeisen promoted the FA Cup Final between Manchester City FC and Portsmouth FC. It was originally produced in a smaller panel format for display in railway and bus advertising panel holders. This is a rare larger paper edition which is Identical in all respects apart from the size and the lack of colour applied to the hands of the red-shirted player.
The 1934 FA Cup final saw Manchester City come back from a goal down to win 2-1 with both goals late in the 2nd half. This was the first FA Cup win for Manchester City in over 30 years and having reached the Final in the previous year only to be comfortably beaten by Everton. The match is most remembered for a young Frank Swift’s heroics in goal and the winning goals of City forward Fred Tilson. The match was also refereed by future FIFA President Stanley Rous in his penultimate game as an official.
Scottish-born Anna Zinkeisen, whose sister Doris Zinkeisen was also an prominent artist, studied at the Royal Academy Schools in 1916 where she won several medals. Principally a painter of society portraits and flowers, she also executed murals (including commissions for the liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth), made sculpture, designed book jackets and magazines and posters for the LNER. Anna Zinkeisen produced over 20 poster designs for London transport between 1933-1944, most of these being panel poster designs.
