Maida Vale W.9 - Borough of Marylebone

Circa 1930s. Rolled Iron and vitreous enamel street sign. . Produced for the Borough of Marylebone. 82cm x 46cm. In custom made wood frame. Condition: Overall good condition with some rust and wear to the edges consistent with being in situ for many decades.

Maida Vale is both a street (forming part of the A5) and an affluent residential neighbourhood with elegant Victorian houses and wide, quiet roads. Daytrippers cruise down the Little Venice waterway in canal boats and stroll its tree-lined footpaths. For many, it is most famous for the BBC Maida vale studios where radio and recording studios have been present since the 1930s.

This use of iron (rather than steel) and serif typeface used indicate that this sign dates to approximately to 1930s.

The Borough of Marylebone was amalgamated into two other boroughs in 1965 with Maida Vale moving into the City of Westminster jurisdiction.
