1925 GWR Metal Station Map in Original Wood Frame
Great Western Railway Map of the System (1925)
Produced by Hancock Cornfield & Waller Ltd. Screen printed Metal (possibly tin) in original oak frame. Part of the delivery label still present on the back. Print Code 3M.25.G.FT. Measures 87cm x 71cm. Condition: Excellent example, a little curved in places and some loss to the bottom of the frame. Marks and wear consistent with being in situ.
This lovely map of the Great Western railway was produced shortly after the Government-imposed ‘grouping’ of railway companies (1923). Therefore this map captures the GWR network at its most extensive, with railway companies in wales and the Midlands among others that were incorported under the GWR name.
This map is a superb example; many of these tin maps have suffered from being exposed to the elements as they were intended for display GWR outside stations. Many lines on this map no longer exist following the Beecham closures on the 1960s. There are remnants of the original delivery label on the back but no sign of which station it was intended for. There is a visible print code on the label that suggests this map was distributed in 1926.
