1906 London Underground Destination Plate "Westminster Bridge Road"
“Westminster Bge Road” London Underground Destination Plate
Single sided Enamel and rolled iron destination plate with white lettering on black background. Drilled holes at each end. produced for Underground Electric Railways of London. Measures 48cm (L) by 7.6cm (H). Condition: Excellent, lightly used. Drilled hole at each end. Slight bow to the plate.
This is an exceptionally rare destination plate; Westminster Bridge Road (renamed Lambeth North in 1917) served as the temporary southern terminus of the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (later contracted to ‘Bakerloo’) upon opening in March 1906. Just 5 months later, the intended southern terminus, Elephant and Castle, opened in August the same year. Therefore this destination plate served as little as 5 months (which may explain its wonderful condition).
This destination plate will have been displayed in the “Gate Stock” carriages that first served the early deep-level tube railways. Gate Stock had doors at the front of each carriage and the destination plate sat directly above these doors.
