"Pull Sideways to Open" 1904

Produced by Metropolitan Railway Company (London). Cast iron with brass finish. Measures 12cm (H) 10cm (W). Marked "Met R". Excellent condition.

This lovely original sign originates from a sliding door in a 1904 Metropolitan Railway carriage. The Metropolitan Railway was London's (and the world') first Underground Railway, opening in January 1863.

At the start of the 20th century, the Metropolitan joined the other Underground railway companies in the daunting task of electrifying their lines and replacing their old steam locomotives with electrical units. This included an order of 32 cars and 62 trailers in 1904 - known as the 1904 stock - and were among the first Underground carriages to have sliding doors - hence the need for this plaque.

The London Transport Museum Acton Depot holds the last remaining example of the 1904 stock carriage - though it is in the process of being restored after a fire in 1997. Despite the fire damage, this plaque is clearly visible (as shown in the last photo).
