Published by the Partington Advertising Company for the Metropolitan District Railway Company. Published c.1880. Measures 107cm x 65cm. Re-backed and with leathers . Excellent condition. A name has been written on the rear, with a date of 1888 which is likely when the map was recovered.
Following the opening of the Metropolitan railway in 1863, The District Railway was the 2nd Underground railway to open in London in 1868, running from South Kensington to Westminster. The Metropolitan District Railway Company produced large format maps laid on Linen from 1874 to 1908. This is the 4th overall edition (as the first "Improved" edition was in fact the 3rd map in the DR large format series) and dates precisely to 1880.
The Inner Circle Completion Line, which opened later than planned in 1884, is shown as in construction.
