National Health Service - Illuminated Pharmacy sign

Wood construction with silhouette of a carboy in red Perspex. Measures 44cm x 19cm. Original painted fascia, modern rear boxing, new light fitting and wiring (with switch). Full working condition. Some subtle drip marks on the front.

We believe the front of this unusual early sign dates to around the inception of Britain’s National Health Service in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The sign features a ‘carboy’; a glass vessel with a globular base tapering to a narrow neck, was commonly displayed filled with brightly coloured liquids in pharmacy shop windows from 1700s right up to mid-20th century.

We have yet to find any other example or in-situ photo but will continue to research and will update the listing if we find anything.
