Victorian London Street Sign - Medway ST, SW - in Original Frame

£750.00

City of Westminster - MEDWAY ST. SW

Original Victorian nameplate/street sign produced by the City of Wesminster, Solid ceramic tablet and inset painted lettering within original wooden frame. Measures 92cm x 34cm x 3cm. Condition: Intact panel in lovely condition with obvious signs of being in situ for many decades. Wooden frame is charmingly worn and scuffed but strong with no movement.

Medway Street is in the heart of Westminster and runs East to West from Horseferry Road and Marsham St. To the western end, Medway Street cuts between two UK Government buildings - the Home Office and the Ministry for House, Communities and Local Government. The Channel 4 Television HQ and Cardinal Hume Centres flank its Eastern end.

Whilst establishing an accurate date is difficult, the City of Westminster standardised street signage, with its distinctive gothic heading, in the 1850s with the introduction of the postal code system. Numbers were added to the postal code format in 1917.
