The First TMNT Poster - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1986)

£350.00

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1986)

Designed by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Published by First Publishing. Copyright Mirage Studios. Dated 1986. Offset Lithograph on glossy stock. Measures 28” x 22” (71cm x 56cm). Excellent unused condition.

This is the earliest known Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle poster and was released to promote the first graphic novel in 1986.

Conceived in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have become one of the worlds largest comic book, toy and film franchises. The early comics were instantly popular and were later compiled into a four-part graphic novel set, the first being released in 1986.

This poster features the same Kevin Eastman cover artwork as the first graphic novel. Whilst most people were introduced to the TMNT via the sanitised kids cartoon in the late 80s, the artwork and storylines of the early comics were dark and extremely violent. Here, we see Leonardo leading Raphael and Donatello through a ominous New York alleyway with the silhouetted Michelangelo keeping watch. Each can be distinguished by their weapon, the commercialisation of the franchise in the late 80s saw the Turtles also given different bandana colours.
