Cats - New London Theatre - Pre-opening Poster / Window Card (1981)

Original ‘Cats’ musical pre-opening poster designed and printed by Dewynters Ltd for Cameron Mackintosh & The Really Useful Theatre Company. 1981. Offset lithograph on card. Measures 50.5cm x 31.7cm. Condition: Outstanding. Stored rolled. Some minor marks.

This original 1981 ‘Cats’ ‘pre-opening’ poster announces to passers-by that ‘Cats’ opens April 30th 1981 at New London Theatre, Dury Lane, London. However, Cameron Mackintosh was forced to delay the opening night until 11th May when Trevor Nunn revealed to the alarmed producers that he was struggling to write the script for the musical. Despite still having no established book or score rehearsals began on 9th March. This was further compounded by Judi Dench (playing Grizabella) ruptured her Achilles tendon just weeks before opening and was replaced by Elaine Paige.

Whilst the musical itself was in turmoil, the stunning and enduring visuals had been settled upon. in good time Cameron Mackintosh engaged the advertising agency Dewynters to design the poster for the musical. After much back-and-forth, the agency presented a minimalist poster consisting of a pair of yellow feline eyes (with dancing silhouettes for the pupils) set against a black backdrop. The producers and the creative team loved the design but felt that the title — Practical Cats — looked out of place when paired with the image of the cat's eyes. The musical's title was thus shortened to just Cats

Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber , based on the 1939 poetry collection “Old Possums Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Elliot. The musical includes the well-known song “Memory” as sung by Grizabella. This year, Cats celebrated its 40th anniversary in the West End.
