Poster Artwork - British Railways By A.D. Downie (1950s)

ACROSS THE COUNTRY - TRAVEL BY BRITISH RAILWAYS

By A.D. Downie V. Undated. Circa 1950s. Gouache on Paper. Measures 'Double Royal: 101 x 63cm / 40" x 24". Excellent condition.

This superbly executed poster proposal for British Railways by AD Downie shows an abstract outline of the British Isles with railway tickets climbing up the country; The 'British Railways' wordmark uses an italic typeface often used in BR posters around the time (though not usually for the company name) and loosely resembles the 'totem' logo of the day beneath that there is a blank 'totem' for the regional network. This design features 2nd Class tickets which replaced 3rd Class in June 1956. The would suggest the design is late 1950s, consistent with other work in the portfolio.

We know very little about A.D. Downie V (we assume the V refers to being the 5th generation with that name). This piece was one of a large portfolio of highly accomplished hand-painted commercial art proposals, many of which were dated in the 1950s. Despite the undeniable skill that Downie possessed, we have found no published work under that name. We don't know if this was an unsolicited submission or an unused commission. Downie's commercial portfolio covered a range of industries including automotive, oil, entertainment and of course railways.
