This rare CD sampler was issued to the Press and other influential audiences, ahead of the opening of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in September 1986. Produced and released ahead of the Original Cast soundtrack, there are just 4 tracks which include a performance of “All I Ask of You” by Sarah Brightman and Cliff Richard. This track was later released as a single on 26th September 1986, the day before the first previews at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

Originally based on the novel by Gaston LaRoux, the The Phantom of the Opera musical was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hard and produced by Cameron Mackintosh. In the year it opened, it won an Oliver Award and in 1988 hit Broadway in New York and remains to the longest running show. Phantom is the 2nd highest grossing musical of all time behind Lion King.
