Diagrammatic Map of Sydney Railway System (1974)
DIAGRAMMTIC MAP OF THE RAILWAY SYSTEM IN THE SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA (1974)
Issued by Public Transport Commission of N.S.W. Two-colour lithograph on paper - centre fold. Blank verso. Measures 37cm x 26.5cm. Excellent Condition.
In 1939, a Sydney railway pocket map was issued that could be described as a ‘rip-off’ of Harry Beck’s iconic London Underground diagram of the day, even down to the Underground logo and blue border.
In an excellent blog by Cameron Booth (here: https://transitmap.net/sydney-railway-layout-1940/) he discovers a later Beck-style issue, dated 1953. Other blogs on this site show some later examples though none feature this 1974 issue.
This unusual two-colour map sees Beck’s diagrammatic rules (loosely) applied once more - sticking closely to the 1939 design with just minor straightening of a few lines. The bends are sharper (reminiscent of the Hutchison 1961-63 Underground map). Alongside each station name is a kilometre value (distance Sydney Terminal Station).
The centre fold suggests it might have come from a book or document, possibly an internal document (Public Transport Commission of N.S.W).
