The Golden Northwest - A Home for All People - The Canadian Pacific Railway

The Grand Transcontinental Highway From The Cities of the East to Winnepeg and Manitoba’s Boundless Wheat Fields

Printed by American Bank Note Co. N.Y. For the Canadian Pacific Railway. Circa 1883 (University of British Columbia hold an example of this poster in their collection and have dated it to 1883.). Colour lithograph on paper. Measures 89cm x 33cm. Condition: Excellent example of this rare poster. Some minor foxing present throughout. Some wear in places. Framed.

This impressive and decorative poster encourages pioneer agriculturalists to head northwest on the half-complete Canadian Pacific Railway for the ‘Winnepeg and Manitoba’s Boundless Wheatfields’. This poster exudes optimism of a promised land. The illustration shows Demeter, the Ancient Greek Goddess of harvest and agriculture, shine her torch upon central Canada. The crude map of North America shows the Canadian Pacific Railway running the full width of the continent, even though in 1883 it had only reached the Rocky Mountains. It didn’t reach Vancouver until 1887.

A sequence of strong harvests in the 1870s provided the basis for promoting land sales, which were offered for as little as $2.50 per acre. Through the 1880s andf 90s, the settlers were faced with a contrasting and harsh reality of appalling winter weather conditions, failed harvests and restrictive government grain policies.
