Architect Plans for School of Film & Television - Royal College of Art (1967)
A School of Film And Television, Royal College of Art
A large collection of architectural plans, maps and photos. 1967. Produced by Noel Lundgren Architect for the Royal College of Art, London. Mostly translucent sheets. In generally very good condition. Approximately 20 items.
Following the construction of the Royal College of Art’s Darwin Building in 1962, architect Noel Lungren drew up floor-by-floor plans for an adjacent building to house the RCA’s School of Film and Television. The proposed building on the corner of Kensington Gore and Queen’s Gate, London, was going to stand 9 storeys high and included a large cinema and underground parking.
However, in a twist of fate (good or bad depending on which side of the architectural debate you take) Kensington was designated a Conservation Area in the very same year - 1967. Thus saving the beautiful Georgian houses from demolition. This includes 25 Kensington Gore which is now a fully restored historic house open to the public.
The plans consist of front and side elevations, aerial plans and one for each floor. The photos have a superimposed mock-up of the proposed building to show how it would appear from different view points. There is also an OS showing the land boundary for the proposed construction.
