This beautiful airline poster designed by the Lewitt Him Partnership was issued at the end of the 40s for American Overseas Airlines. AOA, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines, operated between the United States and Europe from 1945 until it merged with Pam Am in 1950.
The poster depicts a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser in flight over the Atlantic, with a cut away portion of the fuselage showing the double deck interior. The Stratocruiser was certainly advanced for its day with a pressurized cabin for high altitude flight and two decks, one for seated passengers (with capacity for about 80) and a lower lounge for around 14 passengers. AOA inaugurated the Stratocruiser service on its New York - London route from August 17th, 1949, with two of these aircraft. One of these named the "Flagship Great Britain", is shown in the photos. By early 1950 the airline were operating eight 377 Stratocruisers which linked New York and Boston with England, Scotland and Scandinavia.
Lewitt and Him, both graphic artists, met in Warsaw 1933 and quickly discovered they had identical views on graphic design. They formed the Lewitt Him Partnership in London in 1937 and during the WWII, the couple produced posters for the Ministry of Information, the General Post Office and the Ministry of Food among others. After the war, the pair became highly sought after, working with London Transport, Imperial Airways and a number of other airlines including AOA.
