This iconic poster for the 1948 Olympic Games was designed by Czech artist Walter Herz, the chief artist at Heros Publicity Studios Ltd. According to the official post-Games report, there were 100,000 copies made of this poster across three sizes: 50,000 in Double Royal format (101cm x 63cm), 25,000 in Double Crown (76cm x 51cm) and 25,000 Crown format (51x38). This example is the ‘Crown’ size.

The design is a full colour painting of the official emblem for the Games. The background features the Houses of Parliament beneath a blue sky with the hands of the Elizabeth Tower clock pointing to 4 o'clock, the time at which the opening of the Games was planned—accompanied by the Olympic rings. In the foreground, there is the drawing of the statue of the "Discobolus” which, despite there being one in the British Museum around the corner to Herz’s studio, the artwork is based on a different example in the Vatican.
