This richly illustrated book was issued during the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 (Wembley). It contains colour plates by a few of the of the most prominent illustrators and artists of the time, each providing a vibrant representation of a country in the British Empire.

This book is possibly best known for its stunning double page map of the world by Macdonald Gill titled “Map of the World At The Time of Cabot”. Gill, who by this time was considered the father of pictorial maps genre, has produced a highly decorative map honouring John Cabot, who explored parts of mainland North America in 1497 on the commission of Henry VII, and provides a showcase for the bold graphic flourishes typical of Gill's work. Gill also designed the decorative covers.

The London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) had a limited number of these books printed with their name on the cover and presented them to advertisers and investors.
