A very nice copy of the third printing of the UK Bloomsbury first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Phillip Errington, in his book JK Rowling - A Bibliography 1997-2013 [p.4] states that the third printing had a publication figure of only 500 hardback copies, making it more scarce than the second impression which saw 1000 copies.
The third edition was the first book issued with a dust cover. The other notable differences to the second printing are: The text at the bottom of the cover, which changed from a quote by Wendy Cooling to “Winner of the 1997 Smarties Gold Award” and ; the blurb on the back has been changed from review quotes to a short teaser of the story.
In 2021, a new auction record was set by a first impression hardback of the Philosopher’s Stone (500 printed), achieving £356,000 ($421,000). In turn, values of second impressions are achieving 5 figures sums.
It took 5 years between 1990 and 1995, for Jo Rowling to write her debut novel 'Harry Potter and the The Philosopher's Stone'. it follows Harry Potter, a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday, when he receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Published in June 1997 by Bloomsbury, the book was an instant success, immediately winning 'The Smarties Gold award', which is voted for by children. Success followed quickly in the US where it was released in 1998. Since then it has been translated into 73 languages and made into a feature film as have its 6 sequels.
