Stephen Wiltshire is a prodigious cityscape artist and autistic savant, best known for drawing enormous and intricate skyline panoramas entirely from memory. After a brief helicopter ride across a city, Stephen’s unique abilities allow him to recall and draw an entire city to scale and down the right number of windows in each building.

Honoured as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2006, his artworks grace prestigious museums worldwide. At just five, he began drawing lifelike, accurate impressions of cities, skylines and street scenes after having only observed them briefly. He was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire, and by eight, the UK Prime Minister owned one of his pieces.

For this drawing, Stephen combines pencil, ink and pastel to create an evocative night time view of St Pauls Cathedral, Blackfriars Bridge and the City. Viewing (or recalling a memory) from the Southbank and looking north east, Stephen’s drawing captures the juxtaposition of old and new as the eye scans from left to right across the scene - the ‘Gerkin’ building, which was completed 4 years prior, can be seen in the distance. The impressions of his pen into the paper are clearly visible and represent the speed and intensity of his technique.

There are some great videos on youtube about Stephen including a hour long documentary: https://youtu.be/xcX-Nvm-wmE?si=V0GB9WeZjOG07vro
