Original Artwork - Six Abstract Maps of the World (Bulgarian)

£0.00

Gouache on thick card. Unknown Bulgarian artist (unsigned). Circa 1970s. Measures 75cm x 50cm. Excellent condition, some scuffs and marks consistent with 50 years of storage.

We know very little about these stunning abstract maps of the world. They appear to be draft proposals (perhaps for an atlas cover) and were part a larger collection of original commercial art by the same Bulgarian artist.

In achieving the starkly different designs, the artist has used a variety of projections and artistic techniques. Most of the precise patterns have been painstakingly painted by hand whilst on others, the artist has used stencils and even sticky dots. These pieces have been superbly executed. As for projection, the artist has clearly done their research and explored a variety of established world map projections. For example, two of the maps adopt a “Goode homolosine projection” (with one strangely showing the landmasses in mirror image) whilst another uses a three-armed conical approach I have never seen before. Two appear close to a Mercator projection, with another adopting a pseudocylindrical projection.

The original owner, also from Bulgaria, dated the wider collection to the 1970’s based on the political themes and movie poster designs. The are unique pieces and would look incredible as a frame set.
