'Paddington' London Underground Enamel Platform Sign (c.1960s)
Paddington - Enamel London Underground platform roundel sign.
Vitreous enamel and steel sign circa 1960s. Produced for London Transport. Measures 51cm x 71cm. Condition: Excellent in-situ condition. Mounting holes with some minor rust and enamel loss at edges.
This sign was displayed on the track-side wall of Paddington London Underground station which first opened in 1868, serving the Metropolitan Railway and, later, the District Railway. In 1913, deep-level ‘Baker Street and Waterloo Railway’ arrived at Paddington.
The style, size, colour and typeface indicate that this is a 1960s sign and will have been replaced in the early 1980s when a new colour way and typeface was introduced to station signage.
The children's book character Paddington Bear was named after the mainline station. In the books, by Michael Bond, he is found at the station, having come from "deepest, darkest Peru" and with a note attached to his coat reading "please look after this bear, thank you"
