Marylebone London Underground Enamel Sign (1950s)
Marylebone - Enamel London Underground platform frieze sign c.1950's
Produced by Garnier Vitreous enamel sign c.1950s. Measures 114cm (L) x 23cm (H). Condition: Excellent in-situ condition. Original fitting holes. Some wear/loss at the edges.
This is a lovely example of a first generation frieze enamel sign, installed at London Underground stations from 1950s. These signs ran along the length of the platform with the colour of the line along both top and bottom. In the 1990s, these original frieze panels were updated as part of a major station rebranding exercise.
Rather surprisingly for a mainline station, Marylebone is only served by one London Underground line - the Bakerloo line. Hence this sign has the Bakerloo brown running along the top and bottom. Due to the single pair of platforms, signs from Marylebone Underground station are exceptionally rare as the station has seen little redevelopment compared with other central area stations.
