Jubilee Line (London Underground) Direction Light Box Sign c.1977

Made for London Transport. Aluminium lightbox and glass sign set in a hinged front panel. Circa 1977. Measures XXcm x XXcm. 16kg. Battery operated LED lights enclosed for demonstration (can be included in sale). Excellent in situ condition.

This cool illuminated box sign would have been mounted to the wall of a platform or walkway and guided passengers towards the Jubilee line. It will have come from one of the few Underground stations were the Jubilee interchanges with another line - of which there were just 6 upon opening. (I haven’t found a photo of it in-situ yet but will keep looking - i have added photos of similar signs).

Despite being made of aluminium, these lightboxes were extremely heavy (this one is 16kg) and they have a lovely machined and polished quality about them. The front panel that holds the glass sign is hinged and opens up. There are no internal workings anymore - I have put in a strip of battery operated LED lights to demonstrate how easy it is to convert into a cool light.

This is a heavy item so please contact me before purchasing so we can figure out how to get it to you.
