1933 London Underground Quad Royal Station Map 'Places of Interest' (A.L. Gwynne)
By Underground to Places of Interest in London and to London's Sports Grounds
Designed by A.L Gwynne. Printed by Waterlow & Sons for London Passenger Transport Board. Lithograph on paper. Print Code 111.2000.1.33. Quad Royal 50” x 40” / 127cm x 101cm. Condition: Very good. Restored and Linen Backed.
Issued in the same month as Harry Beck’s iconic diagram, this unusual and rare station map by AL Gwynne presents the London Underground network as a means to access London’s places of interest and sports grounds. Whilst similar to other geographically-accurate maps of the early 1930s (By Fred Stingemore) Gwynne’s design sees considerable distortion and compression of the network extremities. Gwynne uses coloured roundels for the terminal stations and which is a feature unique to this map. The background detail is also unlike any other map of its day, with detail limited to parks, lakes and rivers.
