1928 London Underground Map - By EG Perman (Summer)
Underground - What to See and How to Travel - The Electric Railways of London - Summer 1928
Designed by EG Perman. Printed by Waterlow & Sons. No print code. Lithograph on high quality paper. Size: 17 1/2" (45cm) by 14 1/2" (37cm). Condition: Excellent, lovely lightly used example.
The EG Perman design was issued for just one year (1928) and saw two issues (Summer and December 1928) and is widely considered the most decorative and beautiful London Underground map ever published - and the only pocket map ever to appear in portrait orientation.
The 1920s was a period of great creativity and courage to take design and flare beyond its function. EG Perman was almost certainly inspired by Macdonald Gill.
The EG Perman design is the last of the decorative era of London Underground maps with its calligraphy, decorative borders and pictorial content and stands in contrast to the tidy and formal Stingemore Underground pocket maps in circulation at the same time (1925-1932).
Unlike the Gill maps, Perman reinstates the background detail and includes icons for the key tourist attractions of the time. It is understood Perman was commissioned to produce this map specifically for foreign visitors to promote Londons key sights and attractions. Perman also produced his only Underground Double royal poster in the same year, using a similar style.
