District Railway Miniature Map of London c.1892

Lithograph on paper. Two-colour lithograph. Folded paper map, blank verso. Originally attached to a guide book dated 1892.

This ‘miniature map’ series published by the District Railway followed maps of a similar design 1876-1882 which were simply titled “District Railway” or Metropolitan District Railway”. This miniature map continued to be updated and published until 1927.

This edition announces the opening of the line between Putney Bridge and Wimbledon (opened 1890) with an inset map of the new line. We can date this map to late 1892, the same date the guide that it was supplied in was published. A note at the bottom of the map advertises the 5th edition of the District Railway map of London, which was released in 1892. This map shows (in black) the City & South London Railway which opened in 1890 but this is the first issue of the map it is shown on.
