“The Countryman has to live by faith”

Designed by Nancy Smith (1881-1962). Printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd for for Underground Electric Railway Company of London Ltd. Colour lithograph on paper. Print Code 65-500-15-2-16. Poster measures 51.5cm x 30.5cm (linen border of about 2cm all round). Condition: Excellent. Linen-backed. Available framed or unframed.

This evocative panel poster promotes the UERL’s country services from London to the environs: Ickenham to the West (via the District Railway), and via Motorbus to Epping to the East and Epsom to the south. Smith uses a wonderful blend of perspective and a rich palette in her depiction of a farmer. As he ploughs his field at dawn, birds flock to feed from the exposed earth.

London Transport posters don’t come much rarer that this. One of just 500 printed, this is the only example we have ever seen on the market. Whilst the V&A hold one in their collections, the London Transport Museum doesn’t hold one, though they do carry a monochrome print:
