This cleverly designed carriage panel poster, which combines illustration with photography, promotes the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) Championships at White City stadium in 1938. This was a de-facto British Championships for Athletics.
Harry Blacker (professionally known as ‘Nero’) was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants. After five years as a printing and engraving apprentice he started out doing commissions in Fleet Street before going on to design posters for Shell-Mex, BP, London Transport, and the Post Office. Blacker became known as the "Giles" of Anglo-Jewry, after the renowned Daily Express cartoonist. He contributed cartoons to publications including Punch, Liliput, the Jewish Chronicle.
