1960s London Street Sign - Strand WC2 - City of Westminster
Strand WC2. City of Westminster. Theatreland. c1960s Enamel sign.
Enamel sign. Produced for City of Westminster with Certificate of Authenticity. Designed by Sir Misha Black. Measures 117cm x 69cm (large, see image with chair for scale). Good ex-used condition. Some loss to enamel at the edges and a little rust.
This is an original 1960s street sign for Strand WC2, an iconic London street that runs East to West connecting Fleet Street with Trafalgar Square in the heart of London’s ‘Theatreland’. This sign was situated at the junction with Exeter Street above what is currently Salieri Restaurant adjacent to The Strand Palace Hotel.
Strand can be traced back to the Roman period and in the 17th Century formed the connection between the City of London and the Palace of Westminster. Historically, Strand ran alongside the northside of the River Thames before the Victoria Embankment was built in the 1860s. Strand is home to St Clements Dane and St Mary-Le-Strand churches, the Royal Court of Justice, Kings College London, the Savoy Hotel among many other landmarks. Charing Cross lies at its Western end.
This huge sign (see picture on chair for scale) bears the original black strap reading ‘Theatreland’ with pictures of two traditional Pierrot-type clowns. The Theatreland’ signs were replaced in 2009 as part of the Olympic Games preparations in 2012. The new Theatreland signs have a red strap with an image of a comedy tragedy mask - a classic symbol of the stage.
The iconic design of the City of Westminster street signs was the work of Sir Mischa Black, renowned British Architect and designer. Despite its modern appearance, Black designed this street sign format in the 1960s and is now under copyright. Black also designed some of the original moquettes for the London Underground.
