Roald Dahl’s Matilda follows a precocious child with an uncaring mother and father, and her time in school run by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull. Matilda won the Children's Book Award in 1989 and formed the basis for both the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and the successful stage musical which premiered at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010. A film adaptation of the musical was released in December 2022.

Matilda is believed to be the author’s best selling novel, with over 17 million copies sold world wide.

Its hard to believe that Dahl’s initial draft for the novel portrayed Matilda as a wicked, irrational girl who tortured her innocent parents and used her psychokinetic powers to help an unethical teacher win money at horse racing!
