1940's BOAC Poster Artwork - 'Travel By Air' (B. Gough)

£895.00

TRAVEL BY AIR - BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS CORPORATION

Original artwork painted by B. Gough. Gouache on Paper. Hand-painted poster design. 76cm x 51cm. Unsigned but found among other artwork signed by B.Gough. Condition: Worn and creased but presents beautifully as an original artwork.

This wonderful poster design for the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) entices us to 'Travel By Air' and features a top view of an aircraft in flight over a stylised globe, guided by an ornate compass rose.

The original gouache painting was found amongst other designs by a Devon-based artist B.Gough and recently acquired as part of the family estate. The painting carries clues as to its age. Firstly, the aircraft most closely resembles a Lockheed Constellation which was in service for BOAC from 1943 to 1959. "Travel By Air" was an Imperial Airways tagline which featured in their late 1930s publicity. Imperial Airways was merged with British Airways in 1939 to form BOAC who would also adopt the Imperial airways 'speedbird' logo. These clues along with the use of the company's full name 'British Overseas Airways Corporation' strongly point to the mid-1940s, when the company was still establishing its own 'BOAC' brand identity.
