The District Railway Miniature Map of London - 1904 6th Edition
Designed by WE Soar and published for the District Railway. Measures 40cm x 25cm. Two-tone lithograph on paper. 6th Edition. Folded as issued. Cover and District Railway information on verso. Condition: Excellent. Unused.
Following the opening of the Metropolitan railway in 1863, The District Railway was the 2nd Underground railway to open in London in 1868, running from South Kensington to Westminster.
The District Railway Company issued two map formats, a large scale map laid on Linen between (1874 -1907) and with smaller paper pocket map from 1877 - 1927 making these among the first maps of the London Underground. These maps showed the District Railway prominently and other railways in a thinner line. The Metropolitan Railway is shown in red but also thinner than its own.
This edition shows the new Tubes (Bakerloo, Hampstead, Piccadilly) with dashed lines indicating they are in construction - These were opened between 1906-1908. The date on the back is only partially visible, though you can make out it is 1904.
In 1908, The UERL, The Met and the CLR came together and agreed to operate, and cooperate, as a unified network under the single brand (and map).
