Apple Mouse for Apple Lisa A9M0050 - 1983.

Casing design by Bill Dresselhaus. Product design by Hovey-Kelley for Apple Computer Inc. Measures L 9cm x W 6cm x H 3.4cm. Serial No. 10186. This example is in superb, near-mint condition.

This was Apple Computer's first mouse, developed for the Apple Lisa Personal Computer which launched in 1983 at an eye-watering price of $9,995 (equivalent of about $28,000 today). The A9M0050 was among the first commercial mice in the market and was based on the mouse used in the 1970s on the Alto computer at Xerox PARC.

The striking art deco case design was the work of Bill Dresselhaus, one of the first design innovators at Apple Computer & the Principal Product Designer of the Apple Lisa. The functional operation was developed by outside firm Hovey-Kelley who built hundreds of prototypes and conducted exhaustive testing with focus groups in order to create the perfect device. Unique to this mouse was the use of a steel (rather than rubber) ball and it connected by means of a standard DE-9 with a squeeze-release connector.

The obsessive attention to detail paid off - the mouse design remained virtually unchanged for decades and established Apple's mouse as a one-button device for over 20 years. Every single aspect of the mouse was researched and developed, from how many buttons to include, to how loud the click should be.
